About pagdi/safa
Pagdi is a type of head wear. It is traditional wear .pagdi is a piece of cloth averagely nine metres long,but some are even longer. It is also known by different name like paag,safa ,pagdi and turban in some regions .In different regions of India, people wears different types of pagri.
View as a Rajasthani culture
The Rajstan pagri has a special place in the ritualistic life of the people .Its district style and pattern indicates the social status and class of rajsthani men sometime even the size indicates the position of person in society.
While performing pooja (religious functions) or attending any such function one must cover his or her head. It is a symbol of humility or surrendering to the god by the people.
Interesting part to know is the practical uses of this head wear.It is used by men as pillow, towel, rope for drawing water from well ....
Now we wear pagri on any occasions like marriage function, palki of god etc.
Types of safa/pagdi
We could often get to know the region, caste and religion of the men , through the style of the safa worn. The shepherd community had would be recognised by multi-coloured safa they wear. There are many ways to wear a pagdi.
Some of them are:-"Jellory" from jallor,"Bhutti" from jaisalmer,"Jaipuri" pagdi and "shahi Jodhpuri paag " from Jaipur.
There are some types of safa:-
Lahariya chunari safa is made with a special cloth, originating from Rajasthan. The Lahariya chunari safa is one of a kind product. It is known for its ethnic look. It has a dotted pattern and consists of different colours.
The Lahariya chunari safa is made with a long tail and small hornlike shape at the front which reminds us of the royal ensembles.
Rajsthani safa
Rajsthani safa are full of heavy embellishments and are very artistic.
It is made by twisting the safa and can be very elaborate.depending upon the attire, grooms can choose size and the ornaments for the turbans accordingly.
Maharashtrian safa
Maharashtrians commonly wear
Either a saffron (indicating valor)
Or a white (indicating peace) .pheta apart from the colourful one on traditional functions and religious ceremonies.most popular among the style of maharashtrian pagdi is punery (worn by people of Pune).
Banarasi safa
Banarasi safa are very stylish. They have twistings on one side and layering on the other. The overlapping on the front of the safa what makes this style stand out. Even the modern grooms who prefer suites over traditional wear for their wedding will love it. It is generally worn without a tail but it can be customized as preference.
Royal safa
The royal safas are usually distinguished from other safas in accordance with their long tails.
